Get to Know Us: Mahidol University Global Health (MUGH)

Mahidol University Global Health (MUGH) was established in 2012 by a committee under the Institute for Population and Social Research. Initially, it operated under the Division of Planning, Mahidol University, with Professor Emeritus Dr. Chuenruthai Kanchanachitra as its first director. MUGH primarily focused on research and actively participated in the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).

In 2016, the responsibility for MUGH was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, and later in 2018, it moved under the ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD). During this period, Dr. Wiwat Rojanapithayakorn, M.D. served as director (2016–2018).

MUGH was temporarily discontinued in 2020 but was revived in 2021 as an official unit. A committee was formed, bringing together experts from various departments to advance global health initiatives in collaboration with both domestic and international partners. The mission of MUGH is to integrate academic knowledge, data, and cutting-edge technology to drive global health advancements. The current MUGH executive structure includes Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa as the Chair of the Committee, the Deputy President of Mahidol University as the Deputy Chair, and the Division of Planning, Mahidol University as the Secretary. The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) has served as the coordinating unit since its revision.

Various faculties and institutes across Mahidol University actively participate in the MUGH committee, contributing their expertise to advance global health initiatives. These include the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital (RAMA), Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Medical Technology (MT), Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies. Their collective efforts support MUGH’s mission to integrate academic knowledge, data, and cutting-edge technology, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and enhancing Mahidol University’s impact on global health.

MUGH will once again play a crucial role in driving Mahidol University’s global health initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing its impact on global health.
